Introduction

The summer school is the first joint activity from the new ELLS subject area “Digitalization in Life Sciences” Participants will learn about coding in Python, which is highly beneficial for advanced statistical data analysis or as a base for further advanced courses in machine learning, data analytics, or computer science modules. Additionally, the project during the summer school will provide students a kind of a blueprint for other data analysis, e.g., during their Master’s thesis.

Course Content

Intended Learning Outcome (ILO)

After completing the course, the participants should be able to …

Knowledge:

  • graduates will gain knowledge related to the coding in Python. The student is familiar with the basics of programming, has an overview of mod-ern libraries and their use cases. It handles basic Python syntax, simple calculations, pre-processing, and graphical display of data.

Skills:

  • graduates will gain skills for effective use of the Python language for data analysis, machine learning,

Competence:

  • graduates will be able to apply the acquired knowledge and skills both in fur-ther projects and in solving problems in practice

Course Format

The course consists of two basic parts: Preparatory online course and an in-person summer school.

Preparatory online course (prior the summer school): The aim of the online module is to teach coding skills in Python and already foster cooperation and networking of the participants of the summer school.

In-person summer school: Combination of lectures (delivered by ELLS teachers), seminars, working on projects, field trip aimed at gathering information for a project, its presentation and defence.

Type of Assessment and Assessment Criteria

The type of assessment is a certificate with classification and awarding of credits.

Assessment criteria:

  • proving knowledge and understanding of the Python programming language;
  • proving the ability to evaluate other authors' project;
  • proving the ability to solve and defend a practical project.

Cultural Activities

Prague sightseeing, cultural event in a rural area, opening and closing party, optional cultural programme.

Tuition Fees

320 EUR (payment before June 20)
290 EUR (early payment before May 31)

cancellation fee of 250€ has to be paid if a student cancels his or her participation after June 21, 2024.

Costs include:

  • accommodation at the CZU (student residence, available from July 7 to 13, 2024)
  • meals
  • excursion
  • welcome reception
  • online course prior the camp

Additional Costs

Travelling costs to and from Prague, Czech Republic are not covered. Students should ask the IROs of their home universities for possible financial assistance or grants.
